Hobies is an “honest to goodness” family owned and managed East Lansing tradition. It was established by Ernie St. Pierre fifty years ago in Trowbridge Plaza at the corner of Harrison and Trowbridge roads in East Lansing and it remains in that same location today.
Hobies has been providing homemade delicious soups, sandwiches, wraps and salads to nearly three generations of MSU students, faculty and staff and it has not changed much since it first opened its doors in 1962. In addition to baking bread fresh every morning, we cut our meats and cheeses fresh everyday and order fresh produce from a Michigan farm weekly! Hobies is unique and unpretentious. It is not a trendy chain.
You will immediately feel at home when you walk on the brick floors and through the stained glassed entry way. The beautiful stained glass in the walk way along and brick flooring were taken from one of the most significant structures in Lansing’s history. On February 25th, 1971 the beautiful and imposing, Plymouth Congregational Church, which was the most beautiful part of the Lansing downtown skyline was destroyed by a horrific fire. (You can read more about the fire in the article posted in the restaurant). In homage, the stained glass and remnants of the brick were brought into the restaurant. More recently, some of the tables and a wall are made from the old MSU Breslin Center basketball floor. The ceiling bears quaint graffiti from years of patronage.
Hobies also has a variety of beer and wine. You can enjoy a glass or mug with nearly any Spartan, Red Wings, Lions or Tigers game! The amazing food, including those same famous soups, warm atmosphere and friendly staff will make Hobies a tradition for you.
